While many of Charlotte's neighborhoods were built over the last few decades, Dilworth is the exception to the rule. The old streetcar suburb dates back to the late 1800s, and residents work hard to preserve that history which just adds character to the homes, businesses, and streets of today. The neighborhood is truly unlike anything else in the city. Located just south of Uptown, residents can practically walk to attractions and businesses. They can also walk to an assortment of locally-owned shops and restaurants on a crisp Carolina afternoon.

Dilworth is an attractive neighborhood for a multitude of reasons. Some of the best schools in the state are located here. One of the city's most popular parks with ball fields, playgrounds, and picnic areas is also located within its boundaries. The neighborhood is known for its low crime rates, as well as its friendly residents. On any given evening, you will see neighbors out walking their dogs, sitting on their big front porches, or taking an evening stroll to a local eatery, and they will always wave hello or stop to chat.

Dilworth is known for its active homeowner's association, the Dilworth Community Association. The association arranges playgroups, has men's and women's groups, maintains a neighborhood network, and does so much more for the community on a daily basis.

History

The city of Charlotte dates back to 1768 when it was founded and named for Queen Charlotte of England. The largely rural farming community became the site of the first yet short-lived gold rush in the nation in 1799, and after the Civil War, it became one of the biggest producers of textiles in the world. By the late 1900s, Charlotte was well on its way to becoming the country’s second-largest financial center behind only New York City.

Dilworth came about in the 1890s when a man named Edward Dilworth Latta designated 250 acres to become the first planned streetcar suburb in Charlotte. He originally called it the Eighth Ward because its grid pattern closely resembled that of the original four wards in the city. In the years that followed, the streetcar and charming homes attracted new residents and the neighborhood continued to grow. Today, it takes up around 400 acres.

All of Charlotte’s professional sports teams are just a quick drive from Dilworth, as is the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

• Fat Cat Burgers + Bakeshop – Stop by Fat Cat Burgers + Bakeshop for food, beer and fresh-baked goods. It is a new fun, casual, family-friendly spot by Charlotte restaurateur Fran Scibelli. Formerly Fran’s Filling Station, there are still some favorites from the menu but with a new walk-up donut window and handcrafted burgers, fried chicken, salads and more.
  
  
• Bakersfield – Tacos. Tequila. Whiskey. Craving Mexican? Head over to Bakersfield. Start with the trio and enjoy chips, guacamole, and 2 types of salsa to satisfy your craving. Enjoy a short-rib tostada or choose from a wide selection of tacos including beef, chicken & fish. Vegetarian? There are plenty of options including the Hongos Tostada, a portobello, poblano, bell pepper, pickled white onion, cilantro, buttermilk dressing, on a crispy corn tortilla. Serving the area for over 25 years and located in an old home, the casual, award-winning eatery has even been featured on the Food Network. Expect a warm, inviting atmosphere, but be prepared to make reservations, especially for Sunday brunch. The New American cuisine here is just that popular.

Transportation

• Airports– Dilworth is just about 8 miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, one of the most active airports in the country. It serves over 46 million passengers each year.
  
  
• Public Transportation – Residents of Dilworth have access to ample public transportation opportunities, thanks to the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS). Multiple bus stations are located around the community. Access to the Lynx light rail system is also available.

• Major Roads and Interstates – Dilworth is just minutes from Interstates 77 and 277. East Boulevard is something of a Main Street for the neighborhood, and South Boulevard and E Morehead Street form the community’s boundaries to the north, east, and west.

• East Boulevard– Residents of Dilworth enjoy shopping at locally-owned boutiques just as much as they do big-name stores, and East Boulevard is the spot to do just that. Home to dozens of shops and restaurants that are within walking distance of many Dilworth homes, it is definitely a great place to spend a day. • Atherton Mill – Atherton Mill is a larger shopping and dining destination located just along Dilworth's northwestern border. Stores here include Anthropologie, Free People, Lululemon, Madewell, Sephora, Warby Parker, West Elm, and the popular Atherton Market where you can pick up products from local farms, chefs, and artisans.
  
  
• Kenilworth Commons – There are several small shopping centers in Dilworth, such as Kenilworth Commons. It is home to a Harris Teeter grocery store, as well as a few restaurants and small shops and services like Charlotte Yarn, Crema Espresso Bar and Cafe, Yafo Kitchen, Foxcroft Wine Co, and Duck Donuts.

Things To Do

• Latta Park – The 32-acre Latta Park sits in the heart of Dilworth and is the perfect place to spend a day outdoors. It is especially popular with kids. It has a sprayground as well as a playground, basketball courts and multipurpose fields, a volleyball court, a picnic shelter, a rec center, walking trails, and grills.
  
  
• Freedom Park – This 98-acre park is located between Dilworth and Myers Park and is visited year-round by Dilworth residents. The park has 2 playgrounds, baseball fields, tennis courts, NFL Play 60 Kid Zone, basketball court, soccer fields, a 7-acre lake, walking trails that connect to the Little Sugar Creek Greenway and more. The Festival in the Park is the annual fall festival you cannot miss in Dilworth.
  
  
• NASCAR Hall of Fame – Charlotte is NASCAR country, no doubt about that, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame is just minutes north of Dilworth. Check out memorabilia from top drivers and NASCAR history, as well as the interactive exhibits. There is also a theater, café, and gift shop.

• Discovery Place Nature – Dilworth sits just north of Freedom Park which is a popular spot in itself, but it is also home to the Discovery Place Nature Museum. It features live animals, a planetarium, a butterfly pavilion, hands-on programs, and a play area. You can even have a birthday party here.

Real Estate Information

In beautiful Dilworth, you will find an assortment of bungalows, Craftsman-style homes, Queen Anne homes, Victorians, and Colonial Revivals that range from about 1,200 to 6,200 square feet. There are also some condominiums and townhomes available. Most of the homes were built during the late 1800s and early 1900s through the 1930s and have since been renovated, but you may find a little newer construction scattered throughout. Gorgeous old trees and sidewalks line the streets of what used to be a streetcar suburb. Prices start in the $300,000s and range up to about $2 million. The average home price is around $540,000.
