The holiday season is a magical time in Charlotte, filled with dazzling light displays, festive performances, and plenty of holiday cheer. Whether you’re new to town or hosting family, these five must-do festivities are the perfect way to embrace the season.
Skate Into the Holiday Spirit
Charlotte has several outdoor skating rinks, including one of the largest at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. There are four skating areas surrounding an on-ice Airstream that serves hot and cold drinks. Ice skating costs $25, which includes skate rentals.

Let a Light Show Dazzle You
Drive around a NASCAR track lined with lit vignettes at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for $35-$45 per car (or $75 for the express lane). You can stroll through Daniel Stowe’s enchanting gardens where you’ll find thousands of shimmering lights (up to $28 per person).
For another festive experience, head to the Carolina Holiday Light Spectacular in Ballantyne which has a half-mile walking trail with lights and tons of family friendly fun.
Visit Christmas Town USA
Each year, the nearby town of McAdenville puts on one of the most spectacular Christmas displays in the country. The entire town is covered in lights, and visitors can either drive or walk through to enjoy the magic. The displays run through Dec. 26. Don’t miss the Yule Log Parade on Dec. 12 — a 70-year-old tradition! The parade starts at 5:30 p.m., but be sure to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot.
Take the Family to Light the Knights
Head to the Light the Knights Festival, where you can enjoy a German-inspired holiday market, festive light displays, snow tubing, and ice skating — all set against the stunning Charlotte skyline. This family-friendly event is great if you’re hosting out-of-town visitors, as there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Dress up And See “The Nutcracker”
A beloved Charlotte tradition, the Charlotte Ballet’s annual performance of “ The Nutcracker,” accompanied by live music from the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, is a must-see. The show runs from Dec. 6-22, with tickets starting at $32. For a memorable evening, pair the performance with dinner at one of Uptown’s top spots, like Fin & Fino, Albertine, or Mariposa.
