Spring is here in Charlotte! Whether you want to boost your home’s curb appeal before listing it or want to give your forever home a little refresh, April is prime time for gardening. We caught up with Elizabeth Zembry, a master gardener and naturalist at Wing Haven Garden in Myers Park and Bird Sanctuary, to bring you expert tips and tricks!
Now’s the time to plant your peonies, daylilies, annuals, ferns, black-eyed Susans, salvia, herbs, hosta, iris, roses, hydrangeas, butterfly bush and coneflowers. Ground cover like vinca and hens and chicks does well this time of year in Charlotte, too, Zembry tells us.
The key to a happy garden is hydration, so you should water it three to four times a week. Mulch helps retain all that moisture, she says. Add fertilizer one month after planting to give your blooms a boost.
Good drainage is also a must — but you don’t need a fancy professionally installed system, Zembry says. Sloping land, good potting soil with chips and drainage holes in planters, all help water flow.
