Fun Day Trips to Beat the Heat This Summer Near Charlotte, NC

Now that Charlotte is hitting peak high summer temps, it’s time to find creative ways to beat the heat, whether it’s whitewater rafting, river tubing, spending a day at the lake, or even sliding down a waterfall!

One of the most convenient options is the Whitewater Center right here in Charlotte. Cool off while whitewater rafting, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, rock climbing over the water, and more. There are several dining options on-site as well, including a full-service restaurant overlooking the man-made whitewater river. Check the events schedule for races, festivals, and more.

There are also many options for river tubing in North Carolina, all about two hours away from Charlotte. River tubing on the New River in Boone is a fan favorite due to the inviting water temperatures as you float the pure, clear, free-flowing river. The Green River in Saluda, situated between Greenville and Asheville, offers different routes varying from calm flat water to mild rapids with several rope swings along the riverbanks. Visit Wilson Creek outside of Blowing Rock for lazy floating in Pisgah National Forest. For a wide open waterway with exhilarating rapids, take a tubing trip down the Catawba River, just east of Asheville.

A day spent out on one of North Carolina’s nearby lakes is one of the best ways to cool off and enjoy nature. Go fishing, boating, camping and swimming on Lake Norman, just 45 minutes away from Charlotte. An easy hour’s drive to pristine Badin Lake offers fishing, boating and water sport activities as well as hiking and camping in the beautiful Uwharrie National Forest.

For an adventure, take a trip to Sliding Rock, a natural waterslide and swimming hole near Brevard in Pisgah National Forest. Slip and slide down its 60-foot natural mountain waterfall and plunge into the pool of chilly water at the bottom – the perfect way to cool down on even the hottest summer day.
