Settled in the 1750s in the colonial era, this area, located just outside the city limits of Charlotte, still retains its Southern charm with a modern touch. The community was known as Garibaldi Station until 1833, when it was renamed “Belmont”, which means “Beautiful Mountain” because of its proximity to Crowders Mountain.
The town was incorporated within the state of NC in 1895, which brought an organized municipal government system consisting of a mayor, council, and public servants. The Chronicle Mill was the first textile facility within the town, and by 1930 over twenty textile mills called the area home. The proximity to the railroad and river gave Belmont the perfect location for mills in NC.
The textile industry declined from 1970 to 2000 and experienced a short period of economic decline on the late 80s and early 90s. But there has been a renewed interest in the area due to its proximity to Charlotte and abundant access to waterways. Investors have completed numerous residential developments within the Belmont and surrounding area, which include luxury waterfront properties. The downtown area has been revitalized and holds many events throughout the year to bring residents together.
Visit downtown Belmont for many annual events, including an Easter Egg Hunt, Arbor Day Celebration, Friday Night Live, Juneteenth Celebration, Red, White & Belmont, Thursday Night Pops, Farmers Market, Movies in the Park, BooFest, Festival of Trees, and Christmas Tree Lighting, Parade, and Village.
The River District will be located across the Catawba River and become a destination spot for locals for shopping, restaurants, and recreation.
